What is a Solutions Architect?

A solutions architect decides the overall shape of a system — which components exist, how they communicate, where data lives, and which trade-offs are acceptable. The job is as much about constraints, cost and people as it is about technology, and it usually involves explaining a design to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders. It is a senior role that follows years of hands-on building.
