Software engineer is the broadest title in the industry. It usually means someone who builds software as a discipline rather than for one specific surface — thinking about design, correctness, testing, maintenance and the people who will read the code next. Many engineers work on products that aren't websites at all: desktop applications, developer tools, internal platforms, or the systems other teams build on.
